After 5 years I am finally giving up my favorite digital camera ever, a Pentax Optio S for a Sony DSC-W90. The most obvious reason would be the jump from 3 megapixels to 8 megapixels, but the Sony is packed with many other cool features. The Sony is still small (just a little bigger ten the Pentax), but its screen is large 2.5". The ISO goes way up to 3200 (not bat for a point and shoot) and it has steadyshot (can't hurt in those low light situations). the Sony takes high rez video, which is very nice and it will even talk to your PSP.

I like it :)

Modernism as an American ideology from the 50's was very positive. It was believed that our creations would stop hunger, cure disease and house everyone. We built skyscrapers, bridges, water towers and dams. Places to work & live, an ability to connect to people in other places and control of nature to our advantage. As it turned out people are still hungry and the quality of food is decresing. We have new deadly diseases and many people go with out adquate shelter. The dams are bursting (think New Orleans), air travel is becoming unbearable and most everything we have done has helped to destroy the environment. Now all that is left is decaying buildings, fragil bridges and rusted water towers as monuments to the death of an idea.

Light & Sound Reactive Installation

If you happen to find yourself in Richland Washington over the month of April, stop on by the gallery at Washington State University and check out the Reactive Light & Sound Art Installation. The piece contains ten televisions playing video created by the students from the Richland WSU campus. The televisions are used as light projectors so they are faced away from the viewer towards the walls. The over all concept for the show and the sound pieces were created by the students from the WSU Pullman campus. The audio is broken into four areas: natural sounds, man made sounds, television background noise and TV commericials. Each area is controlled by a sensor that turns on or off the audio when someone walks by. This piece gives the viewer the ability to control the audio environment while moving around the piece. The sensor that controls the TV commericials audio has been placed out side the gallery walls, making the people in the hallway a part of the piece.

The catalogue is searchable with each image described by key words relating to its color, material or era's of use. On Friday March 2nd 2007, I was part of an 11 artist project. The idea was to give a motel room (or 2 in my case) to each artist for 24 hours. Our job was to create a site specific installation in the room that considered the context of the space (a motel room) and the cocept of Place. I created a piece titled "Perceived Existence". The above image is taken from the TV in room 367. The TV is showing the bed in room 366.

I came upon this bird in the spring while walking to the town offices in Moscow Idaho. It was a warm day even though the clouds blocked the sun. As I walked by a large historic old house a dog barked and startled me. I looked over towards the house with the dog and there on the driveway was this bird, intact and beautiful. What was the cause of its death?

A couple of summers ago I stayed with a good friend who lives in a cabin in the Catskill Mountains near the reservoir for NYC. My plane came in late at night and the drive back from the airport took an hour or so. Once at the cabin we sat down, had a few beers and exchanged some stories. It was very late when we finally decided to get some sleep. I was asleep for about 45 minuets when all of a sudden the birds started chirping and cawing. The woods seemed to come alive when the sun crested the horizon and the birds signaled the event.

As I have walked around many towns in America, I have often come across the bodies of dead birds. This has both fascinated and scared me. What killed the birds and why did I come across so many bodies? One day I decided to take photographs of the birds to document the event.

Miner birds used to be used in mines as indicators to the quality of the environment in the mine. If the bird died, miners knew they had to get out of the mine fast. I wonder if the dead birds I find are an indicator of some greater environmental issue?

Manipulation

Once we import media into the computer everything is converted into 1's & 0's. This means that in the mind of the computer everything is just on or off. Digitization empowers the computer to alter or manipulate almost anything that is imported into it. Manipulation is one of the computers most important abilities. Imagine writing a research paper and not having an undo function or the ability to cut and paste.

Where do we see the use of manipulation in American culture? What has computer manipulation changed in film, music or politics?

A major aspect of digital art is appropriation. A computer, the main tool of the digital artist, is empty. It requires some form of media to be useful. A photograph can be scanned, a DVD and audio CD can be ripped. These media formats are used by large corporations to create (& sell) the visual and audio culture we interact with everyday. The computer allows artists (and everyone else) to take control of the media from mass culture and re-process it through our own unique filters. The mashed-up music album "the Grey album" and "Star Wars the Phantom Edit" are two popular examples that show the re-working of media through appropriation. Of course with the use of media comes power, the power to sway thought and implant ideas. The fear of relinquishing this power is what drives the increasing lockdown of media content by large corporations (along with the fear of loosing money).

A moment in time captured like a phtotograph, yet containing many seconds instead of just a fragment of a second. Where do we see the loop in American culture? With each new generation of artists comes a reassessment of what art means and how it should function in society. How do we assess art in modern society? What influences are found within our culture and technology that affect our ideas toward art and art creating? I believe that Photoshop, Hip Hop and the Internet are cultural indicators towards what art must encompass to have an impact in (post)modern society.
